Between the Waves

This has been a crazy weather spring! As I’m posting this we are in the middle of another round of tornado warnings, severe thunderstorms and prodigious amounts of rain. I ran out to feed the chickens and glanced at the rain gauge reading at 1.5 inches. I had emptied it last night before I had left for work.

Fortunately we haven’t had any damage like our neighbors in Joplin. A light spat of pea sized hail and some high winds have been all we have had to endure.

We have at least got about half of our garden in. Yesterday I was able to get in another 24 tomatoes and 12 pepper plants. I hilled our potato patch and laid down a heavy helping of partially composted hay and manure between rows. If it drys out at all this week I plan on spreading out one of the compost piles and planting our melons and some squash. Let that pile work a little while it is breaking down.

The strawberries are coming in at full throttle now…jam time!

Sweet potato slips will be going in this week too.

That's not an average man's garden. I swear that's the backyard showplace of Better Homes and Garden.

Thanks Nita…we've had enough of the rough stuff and cold spring. The heat gets turned on. Lows have been in the mid 40's this week. Forecast says 70's by Sunday!

Your garden looks fantastic. So green, and neat, and tidy. I'm glad you all are okay in this crazy weather. Would it surprise you to know that we're badly in need of rain?
